Dayton Flips the Script
DAYTON, OHIO — The Battalion carried Prelims by six-tenths over Gold and a full point and a half over Blue Devils B, and every sign pointed to Salt Lake City taking its first Open Class title. Finals night went the other way. Blue Devils B added 1.525 overnight and closed at 81.725, edging The Battalion's 81.5 by a quarter point in the closest Open Class finish in years. Gold held third at 80.3, close enough that a soft box on either sheet swings the order.
That kind of overnight movement usually means one of two things: a program that peaked its cleaning at exactly the right week, or a GE package that finally landed the way the staff always drew it up. Blue Devils B gained more in GE Music and GE Visual between Prelims and Finals than in any other caption pair, which points toward the second explanation. The show got read better the second time an entire panel saw it in one sitting.
The Whole Division Got Faster
Strip away the placement and the bigger story is how much ground every corps covered between their first scored show and Dayton. 7th Regiment posted the largest single gain in the division, climbing from 47.25 in early July to 70.625 at Finals, a run of plus-23.4 that outpaced corps who finished well above them. Eclipse and Heat Wave were the exceptions, gaining just over two and three points respectively, and both are worth watching for whether that flat trajectory was a program in transition or a program that simply front-loaded its cleaning earlier than everyone else.
How Close Is Close
Blue Devils B's winning 81.725 sits 4.45 points behind Blue Knights, who closed out the World Class Finals stage at 86.175. That is not a gap a corps closes in one offseason, but it is close enough that the conversation about Open Class corps auditioning for a World Class jump in the next two or three years is a real one and not a talking point. Four and a half points is roughly what separated seventh from twelfth at the World Class Finals this year, which means the top of Open Class is already scoring in a range that would have been competitive for a spot in the World Class field.
The Battalion and Gold are inside five points of that same line. None of the three have announced any intention to apply for World Class status, and the DCI board process for a division change is its own multi-year commitment that involves far more than a scoresheet. The Pipeline Runs Both Directions
Blue Devils B and Colt Cadets are not independent programs chasing the corps above them. They are the official development pipelines for Blue Devils and Colts, built specifically to carry a marching-age performer from their first summer into a World Class hornline or drumline a year or two later. That relationship is why Open Class scoring trends matter beyond Open Class itself: when Blue Devils B wins a title on a program built by staff who also teach in Concord, the performers moving through that pipeline are being taught to a World Class standard before they ever age into it.

Open Class staffs are increasingly shared with World Class programs, which means the design and teaching ideas that show up on a Blue Devils or Bluecoats sheet in July are showing up on a Gold or River City Rhythm sheet within a season or two. Corps to Watch for 2027
Blue Devils B enter the offseason as the defending champion with the deepest resources in the division behind them, and the question is whether they can hold the top spot against a field that is still closing. The Battalion lose nothing by finishing second after leading Prelims. A program that builds an 18-point season two years in a row is a program worth building a full preview around before 2027 starts.
Gold are the corps closest to all three of the top spots at once, third by margin small enough to matter and gaining 16.65 points to get there. Columbians and Colt Cadets both posted gains near 18 points from well outside the top five in June to solidly mid-pack at Finals, and both are the kind of programs that tend to keep climbing once the roster and design team behind that kind of jump stays intact. And 7th Regiment, despite finishing ninth, put up the single biggest gain of anyone in the division. A corps that adds 23 points in one summer is a corps that gets a hard look next July regardless of where it lands on the sheet in August.
